How to Use Inspectrosite: Run a Full Website Health Check
Inspectrosite is a free website health checker that runs in your browser. Give it a homepage and in a few seconds it parses the HTML, inventories every script and scores 40+ checks across HTML structure, JavaScript, SEO & social, accessibility, performance, security and the connection itself, then tells you exactly what to fix, in order. This guide walks you through a full check, from your first URL to a report you can hand to a developer.
What You Need
- Any modern web browser, on desktop or phone. Nothing to install, no account.
- The address of the page you want to check, such as your homepage (for example https://mysite.com).
- Or, for pages Inspectrosite can’t fetch, a copy of the page’s HTML source.
- Optional: access to your site’s files or CMS so you can apply the fixes and re-check.
Run Your First Check
-
01
Open Inspectrosite and pick a mode
Open Inspectrosite. Two tabs sit under the intro: 🔗 Fetch a live URL (the default) and 📋 Paste HTML instead.
- Fetch a live URL is the full audit. Inspectrosite downloads the page for you and can also judge the connection (HTTPS, response and timing).
- Paste HTML analyzes source you paste in. Use it for sites that block bots, pages behind a login, or a draft you haven’t published yet. Connection checks are marked “not checked in this mode” because nothing was fetched.
-
02
Enter a URL (or try a demo chip)
Type or paste your address into the URL box (see the annotated shot below — sample target badssl.com) and press 🔗 Check health →. Not sure what to expect? Tap one of the Try: chips, example.com, wikipedia or byteslip.org, to run a sample check instantly.
Your last few checked URLs appear as a Recent list, saved only in your own browser, so re-testing the same site is one tap.
Step 02 — Enter the homepage URL. Here the sample target is badssl.com, a public TLS test site.
Tap Check health → — the score and findings load on the same page; no extra navigation required. -
03
Or paste HTML
On the 📋 Paste HTML instead tab, open your page, use View Source, copy everything and paste it into the big box. Optionally fill in the Base URL for relative links field (for example https://mysite.com) so relative links and images are understood correctly, then press Analyze pasted HTML →.
-
04
Read the score ring and grade
The results card shows a score ring out of 100 and a letter grade. Each scored check earns full credit for a pass, partial credit for a warning and nothing for a fail, and the grade follows the average:
- A: 90 and up (“Excellent — ship it! 🚀”)
- B: 80–89
- C: 65–79
- D: 45–64
- F: below 45
Under the grade, a line tells you how many critical issues to fix first or warnings to polish. The stat tiles show fetch time, html size, scripts found (with how many are external) and images found. The annotated results shot below (badssl.com sample) shows a 78 / C ring plus the Necessary components strip that Step 05 covers next.
Score ring & essentials for badssl.com: 78 → C, with Meta desc and Single H1 flagged missing in Necessary components. -
05
Check the necessary components
The ✅ Necessary components — present / missing card is your quick sanity check: nine essentials every homepage should have, shown as green or red chips with a count such as “8/9 present”: Doctype, Charset, Viewport, Title, Meta desc, Single H1, Favicon, JavaScript and HTTPS. If any of these are red, start there. They are usually one-line fixes with a big payoff.
-
06
Work through “Fix first”
🎯 Fix first — top priorities ranks up to five of the most important problems, critical failures before warnings, with a short fix for each. A pill sums up the whole page, for example “2 critical · 5 warnings · 31 passing”. Tap any item to jump straight to that check and read the full explanation and the exact fix.
-
07
Filter and explore the categories
Below the priorities, the segmented control switches between ⚠ Problems (the default, so you only see what needs work), All and ✓ Passing. The Filter checks… box narrows results by keyword: try alt, https or lazy.
Category pills (HTML structure, JavaScript, SEO & social, Accessibility, Performance, Security, Connection) show the fail ✕, warning ! and pass ✓ counts for each area, and tapping one opens and scrolls to that category. Categories that need work open automatically; use Expand all to see everything. The HTML structure depth shot below shows the pass / warn / fail tally, exact-fix cards, and collapsed warnings.
HTML structure depth: category tally at a glance, fails with exact fix snippets, and collapsed warnings you can expand. -
08
Share, save and re-check
- ⧉ Copy summary copies a plain-text summary (score plus each check as [icon] (category) title) for a ticket, email or chat.
- 🔗 Copy link copies a shareable link. Anyone who opens it gets the same check run automatically in their own browser.
- ⬇ Download report saves a self-contained, colour-coded report of every check, ideal for a client or developer.
- ↻ Re-check runs the same page again after you’ve deployed fixes. The tool’s own advice: fix reds first, ambers second, and re-run until you’re green.
What Stays Private
All the analysis (parsing, scoring and fixes) happens in your browser. When you fetch a URL, Inspectrosite requests just that single HTML document through Byteslip’s own same-origin proxy, because browsers block cross-site reads (CORS) on their own. In the tool’s own words: no crawler, no cookies sent, nothing stored server-side. Paste mode never fetches anything at all.
Tips
- Check your homepage first. That’s what Inspectrosite is built for, and it’s the page search engines and visitors see most.
- The Necessary components card is the fastest win: a missing viewport, title or meta description is usually a one-line fix.
- Inspectrosite reads the HTML the server sends, not what JavaScript builds afterward. If your site is a single-page app that renders content in the browser, some text, headings or links may not be seen. Paste the rendered HTML from your browser’s developer tools for a fuller picture.
- Use Paste HTML to check a page before it goes live.
- Send the downloaded report or a Copy link URL to whoever maintains your site, so they see exactly what you see.
- A perfect score isn’t required. Aim for no reds, then polish ambers that matter to you.
Troubleshooting
It says “⚠ Couldn’t check that page.”
Some sites block automated requests or time out. Switch to 📋 Paste HTML instead: open the page, View Source, copy everything, and paste it in.
Why do some checks say “not checked in this mode”?
In paste mode nothing is downloaded, so connection-level checks (like the response and HTTPS) can’t be measured. Run Fetch a live URL for the full audit.
My site has content but Inspectrosite says headings or text are missing.
Your page is probably built by JavaScript after it loads. Inspectrosite inventories the scripts but scores the delivered HTML. Paste the rendered HTML instead, or add key content to the server-rendered page.
Can it crawl my whole site?
No. It checks one HTML document at a time, on purpose. Run it on each important page you care about.
Does it log in or see private pages?
No cookies are sent, so pages behind a login won’t load. Paste their HTML instead.
