Desk Mode: Pause the Dopamine Apps, Keep Termux Running
The build has eight minutes left. You pick up the phone to check on it, and somehow twenty minutes later you’re deep in short videos and the build finished long ago. The phone wasn’t the problem. Three apps on it were.
Android’s Focus mode (Digital Wellbeing on Pixel and Samsung, plus Samsung’s Restrict app usage in Modes and Routines) freezes chosen apps for a session. Their icons go grey, they won’t open, and their notifications wait. Everything else keeps working: Termux, your SSH client, the docs, Messages. It’s a padlock on the snack drawer, not a blackout.
My take: willpower is a bad tool for this. A switch you flip before the session starts beats deciding not to scroll forty times an hour.
Focus Mode vs. DND vs. Notification Categories
- Focus mode pauses specific apps, both opening them and their alerts. Best when the problem is you opening them. This page.
- Do Not Disturb silences interruptions from everyone, with exceptions for people or alarms. Best for sleep or meetings. See the DND schedule guide.
- Notification categories permanently kill one kind of alert inside an app, like promos, while keeping the useful ones. Best for the low‑level noise that never stops. See mute the noisy channel.
- They stack. A desk setup that works: categories cleaned up once, Focus mode for work blocks, DND at night.
Write Your Pause List
- Pause: social, short video, news, games, shopping. Be honest about your top three. Check Digital Wellbeing’s dashboard if you’re not sure.
- Keep: Phone, Messages, Clock, Maps, your authenticator, Termux and any terminal or SSH app, and whatever app your build or deploy alerts come through.
- Pixel: Digital Wellbeing, plus optional Modes (Bedtime, custom). Samsung: Modes and Routines and/or Digital Wellbeing Focus mode.
Set Up Desk Mode
Step 1: Pixel: Digital Wellbeing Focus mode
Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Focus mode. Tick the dopamine apps to pause. While Focus is on, you can’t open those apps and their notifications stay quiet. Leave Termux, your terminal tools, Messages and Maps unticked.
- Turn on now / Turn off now
- Set a schedule for recurring desk blocks
- Take a break to unpause briefly
Optional: add Focus mode to Quick Settings (Pixel Help) so starting a session is one swipe, not five taps.
Step 2: Pixel: Modes (the bigger hammer)
Settings > Modes: Do Not Disturb, Bedtime, Driving, or Create your own mode with notification filters and display options. Bedtime can also live under Digital Wellbeing → Bedtime mode. Use Modes when you want to filter everyone’s interruptions. Use Focus mode when the problem is specific apps.
Step 3: Samsung: Digital Wellbeing Focus mode
Settings > Digital Wellbeing and parental controls > Digital Wellbeing → under Focus mode pick Work time / Me time / Add. Use Edit to choose the apps to block, then Start / End Focus mode. End the current mode before starting another (Samsung). Try adding a custom one called “Build” for compile sessions.
Step 4: Samsung: Modes and Routines
Settings > Modes and Routines → Modes tab → set up Work, Sleep, etc., or Add mode. Under Stay focused, enable Do not disturb and Restrict app usage to pause distracting apps (Samsung Modes help; Sleep mode guide). Toggle modes from Quick settings → the Modes icon.
Where Desk Mode Leaks
- The browser loophole. Pause the social app and you’ll just open its website. If that’s you, pause the browser too and keep a separate docs browser unpaused, or accept that Focus is a speed bump, not a wall.
- “Take a break” creep. One five‑minute break is fine. Four in an hour means the pause list is wrong or the session is too long. Shorter blocks work better.
- Pausing a tool you need. If a 2FA prompt or a deploy alert comes through a paused app, you’ll miss it. Audit the keep list once and you won’t have to think about it again.
