Set Your Default NFC Tap-to-Pay App on Android
When you tap your phone on a contactless reader, Android opens your default payment app. Set that preference so the right wallet (Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet, or another) answers—not a leftover install.
What You Need
- A phone with NFC hardware and a contactless-capable payment app installed.
- A screen lock (required for tap to pay on Pixel).
- No extra apps required beyond your wallet app.
No NFC? If Settings has no NFC toggle, your phone can’t do contactless tap-to-pay. Pixel Help: you won’t be able to use contactless payments. Some Galaxy A/J models and Wi‑Fi-only tablets also lack NFC.
Pixel — Payment default
Pixel Phone Help (Android 11+ for many steps). Only apps that support contactless payments appear—money-transfer apps don’t.
-
Step 1: Turn on NFC
Open Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > NFC.
Turn on Use NFC. (Search Settings for NFC if menus differ.)
-
Step 2: Set Payment default
Still under NFC: tap Contactless payments > Payment default.
Pick your default payment app (for example Google Wallet / Google Pay).
Tip from Pixel Help: open the payment app you want first, then choose it here so it shows up in the list.
-
Step 3: Screen lock & card ready
Set a screen lock, and finish card setup in Wallet so the card isn’t stuck on “Card not set up.” Thick wallet cases with other NFC cards can block taps—Pixel recommends a case designed for your model.
Samsung — NFC and contactless payments
Samsung US support. Labels may say Contactless payments, Default wallet app, Samsung Pay, or Samsung Wallet.
-
Step 1: Open NFC and contactless payments
Settings > Connections > NFC and contactless payments. Turn the NFC switch on.
-
Step 2: Choose the default
Tap Contactless payments or Default wallet app, then select Samsung Wallet / Samsung Pay or another listed payment app.
