Raise a Wireless Charger on Cork Coasters
Qi pads bake on blankets and vanish into duvet folds. Stack cork coasters or cardboard under the puck—not over the coil face—for a little airflow and a clearer dock height you can grab. Honest limits: thick stacks and thick cases kill alignment. Desk DIY; no apps.
Warnings
CriticalNever put metal discs, cards, or magnets between the coil face and the phone. Don’t cover the pad’s vents. Keep water glasses away from the USB plug side of the puck.
- Shims go under the charger body—never stacked on the charging surface.
- If the phone gets hotter than usual or charge stops/starts, thin the stack or stop overnight wireless on fabric beds.
- Credit cards / transit cards in the case can fail or get warm—remove them for wireless sessions.
What You Need
- 1–3 cork coasters (or corrugated cardboard cut to the pad’s footprint).
- Double-sided tape or a rubber band cradle to keep the stack from skating.
- Your existing Qi / MagSafe wireless charger + cable.
- Phone with and without case for alignment tests.
- No apps required.
Raise the pad
Step 1: Why raise it
Pads sealed against duvet or a sealed desktop trap heat. A small air gap under the puck helps. Extra height also makes the phone easier to grab like a mini dock—without buying a stand.
Step 2: Gather coasters
Start with one coaster. Have a second/third ready only if you still want more height after a successful charge test. Cardboard works if cork isn’t around—cut neat, no wavy soft stack.
Step 3: Stack under the pad
Set coasters on the desk, charger on top, coil face up. Tape or rubber-band so the tower stays level—phones slide off tilted shims. Cable should exit without kinking under the stack.
Step 4: Test case on/off
Center the phone; confirm the charge indicator. Try with your daily case. If charge fails or flickers, the stack is too thick or the phone is off-center—remove a coaster before blaming the charger.
Step 5: Vents, metal, spills
Leave any pad vents open. No metal between coil and phone. Park drinks away from the USB plug so a spill doesn’t crawl into the cable end.
Step 6: MagSafe / magnetic rings
Thick shims don’t sit between magnet and phone (they’re under the pad), but a wobbly tall stack can still misalign magnets. Tug-test the snap; if it feels weak or charge drops when you bump the desk, shorten the tower.
Success checks
- Phone charges steadily with your usual case.
- Pad surface is level; phone doesn’t skate off.
- Stack is under the puck only; coil face is bare.
- Pad runs no hotter than before (often cooler off fabric).
