My Phone Got Weird After a Sideload: The Reset App Preferences Rescue
You installed an APK. Maybe one of mine, maybe a build off GitHub, maybe a Termux add‑on. You tapped through a few prompts too fast. Now links open in the wrong browser, texts go to an app you don’t remember choosing, one app has gone silent, and something you disabled months ago is somehow back.
The phone isn’t broken or haunted. It’s just tangled preferences. Sideloading means a lot of “Open with…”, “Always” and “Allow” taps in a row, and Android remembers every one of them. Reset app preferences is the undo button for that pile. It doesn’t uninstall anything or wipe app storage, and it takes about ten seconds.
My order of operations: reset preferences first, Safe Mode second, factory reset only when everything else has failed. Most “my phone is cursed” moments end at step one.
What It Fixes vs. What It Doesn’t
Usually fixed
- Links, PDFs or videos opening in the wrong app (bad “Always” choices).
- An app that went quiet because its notifications got switched off.
- Apps you disabled coming back, or apps you need stuck as disabled.
- Background data or battery restrictions you set during a panic and forgot about.
- Permission restrictions that are silently blocking an app.
Not fixed
- A crashy or malicious APK. The app stays installed, so uninstall it or test in Safe Mode.
- Boot loops, random reboots or a phone that’s still slow after the reset.
- Corrupted app data. That needs Clear storage on the specific app.
- Anything in a work profile managed by your IT department.
Samsung’s own wording: resetting app preferences restores items like app notifications, default apps and permission restrictions, and existing app data is not affected. Stock Android’s confirmation dialog usually also lists disabled apps, background data restrictions and battery settings. Trust the list on your phone over any web page, including this one.
Screenshot Your Setup First
- Note your defaults: Settings > Apps > Default apps. Screenshot browser, SMS, phone and home app.
- List the apps you disabled on purpose, like carrier bloat or that preinstalled game. They’ll come back on.
- Remember which apps should be quiet. Your muted chats may start buzzing again.
- No apps required and nothing gets uninstalled.
Pixel and Stock Android
Step 1: Open Apps
Open Settings > Apps. Tap See all apps if your build shows it.
Step 2: Find Reset app preferences
Tap More (⋮) → Reset app preferences.
On many Pixels it also lives at Settings > System > Reset options > Reset app preferences. Same switch, different hallway.
Step 3: Read the list, then confirm
Android shows exactly what it’s about to undo. Read it, because builds differ. Then tap Reset apps / Reset. No reboot needed.
Samsung Galaxy
Step 1: Apps → More options
Settings > Apps → More options (⁝) → Reset app preferences.
Step 2: Confirm
Confirm the reset. App data stays. Your notification and default‑app choices don’t, so keep the after‑checklist below handy.
Put Your Phone Back Together
- Re‑pick your browser and SMS app under Default apps, or just open a link and choose Always, deliberately this time.
- Re‑disable the bloat you’d turned off before.
- Check Install unknown apps. Open your file manager or browser’s entry under Special app access and confirm sideload access is set how you want: on for the one installer you trust, off for everything else. The Install Unknown Apps guide has the full path.
- Open the suspect APK once. If the weirdness comes right back, the app is the problem and settings aren’t. Head to Safe Mode and prove it.
