Boot Into Stock Recovery Mode on Android (Official Key Combos Only)
When Settings won’t open, stock recovery (via official button sequences) can reboot or wipe. This guide covers only Google‑ and Samsung‑documented key combos and the stock menu items those pages name. No third‑party recovery images, unofficial package installs from recovery, or unlock steps.
What You Need
- Backup if you might wipe (Tutorial 37 / 16).
- Google account credentials (recovery wipe triggers FRP / Device Protection).
- Samsung button path: USB cable to a computer often required (Samsung IE support).
- OEM stock recovery only—no third‑party recovery tools.
Safe to use (when listed on‑device): Reboot system now (exit without wiping). Wipe data/factory reset / Factory data reset / Delete all user data when you intend a full erase (same data loss as Tutorial 37). Prefer Settings wipe for trade‑ins (Pixel Help). We do not document unofficial package installs from recovery or any unlock flow.
Step 1: Pixel — enter recovery (via Fastboot menu)
From Pixel Help 16493042:
- Turn the phone off.
- Pixel 6 and later: press and hold Volume down + Power together (up to ~30 seconds) until Fastboot mode appears. Holding too long restarts—retry.
- Earlier Pixels: press and hold Volume up + Power until Fastboot appears.
- Volume keys move the highlight → select Recovery Mode → press Power.
- On “No command”: hold Power, press Volume up, release both quickly.
Step 2: Pixel — stock menu actions
Under Android Recovery (same Pixel Help article): Volume to move, Power to select.
- Reboot system now — leave recovery without wiping.
- Wipe data/factory reset → confirm Factory data reset → wait for “Data wipe complete” → Reboot system now.
Step 3: Samsung — enter recovery (model‑dependent)
From Samsung’s factory‑reset‑with‑buttons guide (samsung.com/ie/…/how-do-i-perform-factory-reset-on-my-mobile-device):
- Power the device off.
- Plug into a computer with a USB cable.
- Open recovery with the combo for your hardware (release when the device vibrates / Samsung logo):
- Physical Home button (e.g. S6/S7 era): Volume Up + Home + Power (release Power on first vibrate; release others when the menu appears).
- Bixby + separate Power (e.g. S8–S10 era): Volume Up + Bixby + Power.
- No Home button / modern Side key (tablets without Home on the same page): Volume Up + Power/Side. Phone combos vary by model—confirm on Samsung support for your exact model if unsure.
Step 4: Samsung — stock menu actions
Volume keys highlight; Power/Side selects (same Samsung page):
- Reboot system now — exit safely.
- Wipe data/factory reset or Delete all user data → confirm Yes / Factory data reset → then Reboot system now.
Expect Google account verification afterward (Samsung Device Protection / FRP).
Out of scope
No third‑party recovery images, no unofficial packages from recovery, no bootloader unlock, no PC flashing tools. If a recovery item isn’t named on the official pages above, don’t experiment—use Reboot system now and seek OEM support.
