Tape-Seal a Cracked Phone Case Seam
Case corner split and pocket grit keeps migrating onto the glass? A snug outside tape wrap can delay dust until a replacement case arrives. This is a temporary grit barrier—not waterproofing, not an IP rating, and not a fix for a bent phone frame. Physical field DIY; no apps.
Warnings
CriticalTape on a case does not make the phone swim-proof or restore any IP seal. If the phone chassis itself is cracked or bent, don’t expect tape on the case to protect internals—that’s a different repair.
- Don’t crush volume/power buttons under tight wraps—leave click travel.
- Avoid covering cameras, flash, mics, speakers, the charge-port mouth, or the center-back wireless-charge zone more than you must.
- Replace the case ASAP; peel leftover goo later with the tape-residue approach.
What You Need
- Clear packing tape or electrical tape.
- Dry cloth; optional isopropyl on the case plastic only.
- Scissors to trim clean edges.
- The cracked case (phone removed).
- No apps required.
Seal the seam
Step 1: Remove phone; inspect
Pop the phone out. Shake/brush grit from the case and off the phone. Check whether the phone frame is cracked or bent—if it is, tape on the case won’t restore sealing; treat that as chassis damage, not a case DIY.
Step 2: Clean the seam
Wipe the split dry. Optional: IPA on a cloth for the plastic lips only so tape sticks. Let any solvent flash off before wrapping.
Step 3: Align and wrap
Pinch the crack closed so edges meet. Wrap tape around the outside spanning the split—snug tension, 1–2 overlapping turns. Don’t torque so hard that the case deforms or buttons bind.
Step 4: Keep openings clear
Route the wrap so ports, mics, speakers, cameras, and as much of the center-back wireless coil area as practical stay uncovered. Never tape shut the charge-port mouth.
Step 5: Reinstall; check buttons
Seat the phone again. Confirm volume/power still click and the case isn’t pinching the sides. Expect better dust delay—not pool use.
Step 6: Replace ASAP
Order or buy a new case. When you retire this one, peel tape and clean residue with the same gentle dab / tiny-IPA habits as screen goo removal—on plastic, coatings are less fragile, but ports still hate liquids.
Success checks
- Split stays closed under light pocket flex.
- Buttons click; charge port and cameras usable.
- Less grit migrating onto the glass after a day in the same pocket.
- You treat it as temporary—not a swimming or IP claim.
