Turn Developer Options Off Completely on Android

Difficulty: Advanced ~2 min Developer options

Finished debugging? Flip the master switch so Stay awake, USB debugging, overlays, and friends stop applying. Official Pixel Help and Samsung support both document turning Developer options off from the top of that screen.

What You Need

What turns off: Android Developers: at the top of Developer options you can toggle the screen on/off; when off, most options are disabled (except some that don’t need a computer link). That includes USB debugging, Stay awake, Show taps, Wireless debugging, and similar.

What does not necessarily reset: Official docs do not promise every individual preference is wiped. Values you set may still be there if you re‑enable Developer options later—so don’t assume “off” erases OEM unlocking, USB configuration defaults, or authorization history. Treat “off” as inactive, not a factory reset of that menu.

  1. Step 1: Open Developer options

Settings > System > Developer options (Samsung: often near the bottom of the main Settings list).

  2. Step 2: Turn off the master switch

Pixel Help: turn off Use developer options. Samsung: tap the switch at the top of Developer options to turn it off (hides the menu).

Confirm any prompt. Pixel Help: if asked to restart, tap Restart.

  3. Step 3: Confirm it’s gone

USB debugging should stop; demo overlays and Stay awake should no longer apply. The Developer options entry may disappear until you tap Build number seven times again.

  4. Step 4: Optional — Disable permission monitoring

Some devices show Disable permission monitoring inside Developer options. Android Developers (Baseline Profiles overview) documents it only as a niche workaround for profile generation on certain OEMs: if generation fails, turn that option off (do not leave permission monitoring disabled).

For normal users: leave Disable permission monitoring off (default). Don’t enable it casually—it’s a developer testing control, not a privacy booster.
