What Verify Apps Over USB Does in Android Developer Options

Difficulty: Advanced ~2 min Developer options

Verify apps over USB is a Developer options switch that includes debugging/USB package installs in the same package‑verification checks used for other installs. It lives in the Android Settings app (AOSP Development settings). Leave it on unless you have a deliberate testing reason to turn it off.

What You Need

What it does: In AOSP Settings, this preference controls whether package verification also covers apps installed through USB debugging (include‑ADB verifier flag). It’s a safety net for sideloaded debug packages—not a substitute for installing only software you trust. It does not replace Play Protect for Play Store installs.

  1. Step 1: Open Developer options

Settings > System > Developer options (enable via Build number ×7 first if needed).

  2. Step 2: Find Verify apps over USB

Search Settings for Verify apps over USB. It’s usually near USB debugging under Debugging.

If the switch is grayed out: turn USB debugging on, or the device may lack a visible package verifier (AOSP hides the preference when verification isn’t available).

  3. Step 3: Leave it on (recommended)

For everyday use and any USB‑debug packages you didn’t build yourself, keep Verify apps over USB on.

Developers sometimes turn it off temporarily to speed repeated test loads of their own builds—then turn it back on. This tutorial does not cover loading apps from a computer.
