toyota.com’s homepage scored 78 on Inspectrosite
By Johnny · Byteslip · scan run
After google.com, wikipedia.org, hawaii.gov, amazon.com, ebay.com, and meta.com, I pointed Inspectrosite at toyota.com. It came back with 78 out of 100, grade C. This time the number belongs to the real official homepage, not a challenge or error page.
Quick disclosure: Inspectrosite is Byteslip’s own free browser tool. The badge above is just a picture of the score from our scan, not proof of anything (anyone can type a number into a badge link). The real record is the scan itself, and you can run it again here.
A redirect, then the actual homepage
We started at https://toyota.com/. The server sent a normal HTTP redirect to https://www.toyota.com/, and Inspectrosite follows those.
What came back was HTTP 200 and the official homepage, titled “New Cars, Trucks, SUVs & Hybrids | Toyota Official Site.” It has about 2,007 words of visible text and 75 images. Nothing was cut off (truncated=false).
That’s different from the last three company scans. Amazon’s 82 was an AWS WAF bot-check page (HTTP 202). eBay’s 78 was a short Akamai 403 “Error Page | eBay.” Meta’s 75 was an HTTP 400 “Error | Meta” JavaScript shell. Toyota let the scanner in, so this time we’re reading a real homepage.
It ran 57 checks: 34 passed, 8 warned, 8 failed, and 7 were info only. The HTML came back in 1017 ms (including our proxy). Inventory: 38 scripts (29 external, 9 inline), 75 images, 22 stylesheets, 270 links, 0 forms, about 2,007 visible words.
It’s the same number as eBay’s 78, but the two pages have nothing else in common. eBay’s was a 1.7 KB error page. Toyota’s is an 840.8 KB homepage full of content.
The eight fails, in plain language
Weight and loading.
HTML document is 840.8 KB
The HTML alone is 860,952 bytes, before any images, scripts, or stylesheets load. Inspectrosite fails anything that large. The fetch was still quick, though: 1017 ms, which passed as “snappy.”
7 render-blocking script(s) in <head>
Seven classic scripts in the head have to download and run before the browser can paint anything. The check names an auth script, a reCAPTCHA script, and an Adobe visitor script.
Inline JS totals 244.4 KB
A lot of JavaScript sits directly in the HTML, so the browser can’t cache it between pages, and every load re-downloads it.
60 blocking resources (38 JS + 22 CSS)
38 scripts plus 22 stylesheets. Each file is another round-trip.
Phones and zoom.
Viewport disables pinch-zoom
The viewport tag is there, but it reads
width=device-width, initial-scale=1, minimal-ui, maximum-scale=1.0, minimum-scale=1.0. Locking the scale at 1 blocks pinch-to-zoom on many phones, and people with low vision rely on that to read small text.Structure and screen readers.
No <h1> heading
The page has 18 headings in a logical order, but none of them is an
<h1>. Without one, a screen reader or a search engine has no single heading that says what the page is about.Duplicate IDs: clip0_316_874, puwylo_bap_app_collapsed, explore-all-vehicles
Three
idvalues show up more than once. When that happens, anchor links, labels, andgetElementByIdonly find the first one.9 button(s) with no name
Nine buttons have no text and no label, so a screen reader just announces “button.” Usually these are icon-only buttons.
Eight warnings, grouped
- Images: 75 images are missing width/height, so the layout can jump while they load, and 0/75 use lazy-loading.
- Accessibility: 7 fields are missing labels and there are 3 empty links. The page has 0
<form>tags, but fields can sit outside forms. - Markup: 24 HTML comments in a large file, so the HTML may not be minified.
- Head tags: no theme-color meta and no Twitter/X card tag.
- Links: 4
target=_blanklinks are missingrel=noopener. That was the only security warning.
What looked solid
78 is a check average, not a grade of Toyota
Inspectrosite’s score is an average of the checks that count. A pass is worth 100, a warning 60, and a fail 0. Info checks are left out. So 78 tells you how this one homepage response did on our checklist. It isn’t a grade for Toyota the carmaker, its cars, or buying one.
Next to the earlier notes: google.com scored 75 and wikipedia.org scored 89, both on real homepages. hawaii.gov scored 67, and its portal scored 91. Amazon (82), eBay (78), and Meta (75) were all scored on pages visitors don’t normally see. Toyota belongs with Google and Wikipedia: a real homepage, with most of its points lost to page weight, JavaScript, and a few accessibility details.
