That APK Stole “Open With”: Take Back One App’s Defaults on Android
You sideloaded a shiny new PDF viewer, video player or “lightweight browser”. It asked to open something, you tapped Always without reading, and now every PDF, every MP4 and half your links open in an app you were only trying out. The old app is still installed. Android just stopped asking.
To be fair to the APK, it usually didn’t steal anything. You handed it the keys with one fast tap, or it claimed a batch of “supported links” when you installed it. Either way, the fix is surgical: clear that one app’s Open by default settings and Android goes back to asking.
My take: reach for the scalpel before the sledgehammer. Reset app preferences fixes this too, but it also wipes every default, notification choice and disabled app on the phone. Don’t nuke 40 settings to fix one.
Clear One App vs. Reset Everything
Clear this one app (this page)
- You know exactly which app is hijacking links or files.
- Only one or two file types or link types are wrong.
- Everything else on the phone is behaving.
Reset all app preferences
- Several apps installed in one sideload binge, and you can’t tell who grabbed what.
- Defaults plus notifications plus disabled apps are all acting strange.
- You’ve already cleared the obvious suspect and it’s still weird.
What You Need
- Name the thief. Open the link or file once and note which app opens it. That’s the one to fix, not the app you wish it were.
- Android 14+ for some Pixel wording (Pixel Help). Older builds have the same button under similar names.
- No apps required.
Take the Keys Back
Step 1: Pixel: Clear default preferences
Settings > Apps → open the thief (or See all apps) → Open by default → Clear default preferences.
Next time you open that link or file type, the phone asks again. Pick the app you actually want.
Step 2: Samsung: same idea, plus category defaults
Open the app’s info: Settings > Apps → app → look for Set as default / Open by default → clear defaults (wording varies by One UI).
If the theft was a whole category (browser, SMS, assistant): Settings > Apps > Choose default apps → pick the category → select the app you want back (Samsung Help).
Step 3: Supported links (if shown)
On newer Android, Open by default may list verified links or an Open supported links toggle. That’s how an app grabs certain web URLs without asking. Turn it off (or clear preferences) and those links go back to your browser. Use the official Clear default preferences button when it’s there.
Step 4: Re‑pick on probation
When the chooser appears, use Just once for a few days. Always locks the choice in until you come back here, so save it for apps that have earned it.
Don’t Hit Clear Data by Accident
The same App info screen has Storage → Clear cache / Clear data (Samsung documents both). Clear data resets the app’s content and logins. Clearing defaults only resets “Open with / Always” choices and doesn’t delete your files or log you out. They’re one screen apart, so read before you tap.
Keep it from happening again: the browser or file manager you sideloaded from still has permission to install more APKs. If this was a one‑off experiment, switch that off. The Install Unknown Apps guide shows where.
